- 3rd-4th June 2009: 2009 International Forum on Online Dispute Resolution - University of Haifa, Israel
-
The spread of digital technologies in recent decades has transformed the field of conflict resolution. Whereas in the past, institutions and processes for addressing disputes were premised on physical presence and face-to-face interaction, new mechanisms for addressing disputes have emerged online. These processes - typically termed Online Dispute Resolution (ODR) – were perceived initially as an appropriate means for addressing simple disputes that emerged online and for which traditional dispute resolution avenues (courts or face-to-face ADR) were not available. Nowadays, ODR has spread to additional domains such as family disputes and peace building efforts, e.g. offline, complex and emotional disputes, precisely those domains originally perceived as inappropriate for ODR. Consequently, ODR is no longer confined to the delivery of processes of dispute resolution online but studies the role and impact of technology on the emergence, transformation and resolution of disputes. This broader understanding covers such developments as Digital Courts and the Transformation of the Legal Profession into the province of ODR. The location of the conference provides a unique setting for exploring these themes. Haifa, the third largest city in Israel, is a center for IT development and entrepreneurship and a unique locus in which people of different religions and ethnic backgrounds live side by side. Israel, more generally, is home of numerous technological breakthroughs, but is also in the midst of a long-lasting and bloody conflict with the Palestinian population. For more information please contact Dr. Orna Rabinovich-Einy, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Law, University of Haifa at orabin@research.haifa.ac.il or Ms. Meital Duvdevani, Haifa Center of Law and Technology Coordinator at techlaw@law.haifa.ac.il.

Jurix 2008 - The 21st International Conference on Legal Knowledge and Information SystemsFlorence,Italy - 10th-13th December 2008
Graham Ross has been invited to present on online mediation at the 5th International Workshop on Online Dispute Resolution to be held on the 13th December as part of the program of Jurix 2008.
For more that 20 years the Jurix Conference has gathered academics and practitioners in the field of legal informatics, providing an international forum for sharing ideas and experiences on the representation of legal contents and their management in computer systems.
The 21st edition of Jurix will be held in Florence, and will be organised by the Institute of Legal Information Theory and Techniques (ITTIG-CNR) in conjunction with the European University Institute (EUI).

- 3rd-5th December 2008: The Internet Governance Forum - Hyderabad, India
-

The Forum included a workshop on Online Dispute Resolution. Speakers included Jeff Aresty of the Internet Bar , Professor Vivekanandan of the National Academy of Legal Studies and Research, India and Professor Hong Xue of Beijing Normal University, China. Dan Rainey, Director of the Office of Alternative Dispute Resolution Services at the National Mediation Board in the USA and Graham Ross, MD of TheMediationRoom.com, were invited to deliver presentations remotely.
The workshop focused mainly on Online Dispute Resolution (ODR), its implementation, and importance in creating a trustworthy, transparent and non-discriminatory legal, regulatory and policy environment, as well as how ODR can help the Internet bring benefits to developing areas. Developing ODR is not only important as a key step towards the development of a more open non-discriminatory trading system, but is also a central component of e-commerce and technological development. ODR can aid in creating opportunities for friction-free cross-border commercial activities through the smooth resolution of possible disputes.
The importance of ODR cannot be overstated, as it is a necessary tool for both creating an online justice system that could develop and also implementing enabling policies that reflect not only everyday realities resulting from Internet use and misuse. ODR could also provide an alternative to divergent national policies that are often slow to adapt to technological development, and could promote an international environment supportive of e-commerce. - 1st-4th December 2008 : e-Government Conference, Cairo
-

The 2nd International Conference on the Theory and Practice of Electronic Government 2008 - Cairo, Egypt
Graham Ross and The Mediation Room.com were invited to present on the pilot we ran for the UK Ministry of Justice of use of our platform for online mediation.
Graham had previously presented in Cairo at the 4th United Nations Forum on Online Dispute Resolution held in 2005.
The rationale of the Conference was given as follows:- Several years after the acceptance of Electronic Government by governments worldwide as part of their reform initiatives, there is a growing recognition that over-reliance on technology, insufficient collaboration in government, lack of emphasis on building human capacity and inadequate public consultation all limit possible benefits of such initiatives
As a result, the focus has been shifting from technology-enabled improvements in government operations (Electronic Government) to improvements in interactions between government, non-government and civil society stakeholders (Electronic Governance).
Under the new focus, it is no longer acceptable to let technical or organizational issues drive Electronic Governance initiatives alone. Instead, a multi-disciplinary, multi-stakeholder and community-oriented approach is required.
